MY MEMORIES

I immediately started looking for a new teaching job. As it turned out the Computer Science Department at University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh was looking for a Department Chairman and I applied and was hired. Problem solved except Nancy would be living in La Crosse and I would be living in Oshkosh. We found a place to live a few miles southwest of Oshkosh. We rented a duplex that was owned by my secretary’s family. We found a small studio apartment for Nancy in La Crosse where she would live during the week. We gave up our duplex in La Crosse, put our furniture in storage, and moved into graduate student housing at Iowa State University in Ames for the second summer so Nancy could complete her PhD course work.

So in the Fall of 1980, I started a new work adventure as Chairman of the Computer Science Department at University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh. The department was relatively new with only 4 teachers, 2 of which were tenured and as I was to find out later, both of them had been Department Chairs and in both cases had been asked to step down by the Dean. I was technically only a half time as chairman and the other half was as a teacher of 2 classes every semester.
